I have been working in carpentry, cabinetry and handyman work for 38 years. I have worked in all types of homes and have had the privilege of working in some of Washington area’s finest homes for both builders and owners.
I have done challenging projects from handrail and stair work to built-in cabinetry. Even furniture reproduction and boat building (though I do not sell myself as a furniture maker or boat builder.) I currently do a lot of what I call “not glorious” work. I consider it the real work. Home maintenance. Handyman. Fix It. And I enjoy it.
I do my own work. If subcontractors are needed I consult with the customer, find the appropriate one and move forward. I do my best to involve and communicate with customers about the project at hand and ask lots of questions. I do not assume anything about a customer’s taste or their interest in details.

Services
Serving and based in Arlington, Virginia, I offer services in general carpentry and handyman work. Typically I do work I can handle by myself. Projects cover a wide range of services from dry wall repair, rot repair, interior door replacement, building a closet to changing light bulbs and air filters. Often people are glad to discover that I am willing to take on the projects other contractors deem to small. I welcome small projects though I do have a three hour minimum for a one time appointment.
If I feel the work will not be best served by me I will say so and steer the customer in the best direction I can to serve those needs.
Whether it is a built-in cabinet, repair work, drywall repair- whatever the project is - just contact me and ask about your situation. You will be more informed regardless of whom you choose to do your project.
Pricing
Typically I work by the hour with a three hour minimum.
Keep in mind that hiring a carpenter/handyman who can do the many projects you may have need of being done is more efficient than trying to find individual “specialists” to accomplish those projects. The time factor alone is a consideration as your time is valuable too. I may (may) cost more to trouble-shoot an electrical issue or find a part for the sink but that coupled with the shorter time to do the other quicker projects can end up a savings to you.
I do not believe in estimating low on a project to gain a job. I would rather decline a job than end up with a surprised and unhappy customer concerning pricing.

Jeff's Fan Birds
An old Eastern European woodworking craft.
The process involved in making these Fan Birds is as fascinating as the finished Fan Birds themselves and is what makes them so unique and a wonder to see.
One continuous piece of wood. Not assembled.
I have tried to bring a unique style and technique to the craft of Fan Bird carving.
Beginning with a single specially selected small block of wood- which is typically cedar- I carve, sand, split, soak in water and fan out each bird. Over the years I have developed steps to the process that yields my personal take and style on the craft. Each bird is about a three day process to complete and is actually worked in my hands for about two to three hours.
I was taught the basics of this craft by the Master of the craft in America, Glen VanAntwerp, around 1987 when he was demonstrating at the Smithsonian Folk Life Festival on the Mall in Washington D.C.
Currently I can usually be found selling and demonstrating the craft on Saturdays at Eastern Market on Capital Hill in Washington D.C. Contact me to verify my schedule or if you have other questions.
